2025 Maryland Legislative Session Updates

Midway through the Maryland Legislative Session, legislators have tackled many key topics so far. Most notably, the budget is an important one, along with several other items of note:

Shutdown. The possibility of a federal government shutdown looms, and Senate President Bill Ferguson warns there may be a lack of resources to provide help to impacted workers. Read more.

Nominations. More than 200 “Green Bag” appointments – nominations to state boards and commissions – were submitted earlier this month. The appointments made by Governor Wes Moore must be confirmed by the Senate. See the list.

Cuts. The Senate Budget and Taxation Committee is looking at options to address what was already projected to be a $3 billion budget deficit in 2026. According to Maryland Matters, there is growing talk of a special session later this year to address the budget issues.

Drinks. From debates on selling beer and wine at grocery stores to a proposed tax on sugary drinks, multiple bills are under review by the Maryland General Assembly that impact what’s in your cup and how much you’ll pay for it.
