Adult Recreational Cannabis Use Now Legal in Maryland

The day has come: The Maryland General Assembly passed House Bill 556 and Senate Bill 516, which developed a framework for adult-use cannabis sales to begin on July 1, 2023.

People age 21 and older can now buy cannabis products from licensed dispensaries as long as they show government-issued photo ID to prove their age.

The details, as passed into law:

  • Medical cannabis stores will be able to get a dual license to sell recreational marijuana
  • Additional licenses made available with an emphasis on equity
  • The tax will be 9%.
  • Adults 21 and over will be able to possess up to 1.5 ounces of cannabis and two marijuana plants.
  • You can consume or smoke marijuana at home or in a private setting, but it’s illegal to use it in public places, including parks, streets, sidewalks, bars, restaurants, public transportation and places of employment.
  • It’s also illegal to use cannabis inside a vehicle – whether you’re a driver or a passenger.
