Governor’s Briefing on COVID-19: April 21, 2021

Governor Larry Hogan:

  • 4 million vaccines administered to-date.
  • Vaccinated more than 82% of 65+, more than 55% of 18+
  • Recognized by Biden administration for the Maryland Vaccine Equity Task Force plan
  • 3000 points of distribution: 509 pharmacies, 104 doctors’ offices
  • Equity Task Force is adding clinics each week
  • Tomorrow Ripken Stadium opens as a mass vax site (Harford County)
  • Howard County site at the Mall in Columbia opens next week
  • No appointment walk-up lines in at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, Baltimore Convention Center Field Hospital, and Greenbelt Metro Station
  • Milestones:
    • Six Flags reached 250,000
    • Southern MD reached 100,000
    • M&T reaches 1,000 in one hour
  • Make an appointment at COVIDvax.maryland.gov OR call 1-855-MD-GOVAX (call 7 days a week, 7 am to 10 pm)
  • We still have a ways to go
  • GOAL: VACCINATE EVERY MARYLANDER WHO WANTS A VACCINE
  • “NO ARM LEFT BEHIND” all-hands-on-deck effort
  • Redoubling effort:
    • Contacting more than 70,000 Medicaid recipients age 50+
    • Conducting clinics at senior centers with Rite Aid, Safeway, and Giant pharmacies (Senior centers are authorized to reopen as of April 30)
  • Higher education:
    • Blocking off appointments for college students, especially at College Park/Greenbelt
    • Partnering with Maryland Higher Education Commission to conduct campus research
    • Working with 42 colleges and universities on a social media ad campaign
  • New clinics for agricultural and essential workers
  • New PSA featuring doctors from across the state encouraging vaccination
  • Encourage all people you know to get vaccinated

Brigadier General Janeen Birckhead, head of the Maryland Vaccine Equity Task Force:

  • 5th in the nation for vaccinating Black Americans, 8th for vaccinating Asian American Pacific Islander communities, and 13th for Hispanic population
  • Meeting people where they are–in their cultural centers, in their neighborhoods
  • Delivering vaccines in hard-to-reach areas
  • “Defeat virus through equity”
  • Partnerships with Morgan State University and Bowie State University to do walk-up vaccinations
